About

A 200-year-old private house on a vast site of 20,000 square meters.

We, the "First-Class Architect Office Hito & Furumiya," created
" Marugayatsu, a one-building rental and hands-on accommodation facility"
to preserve, revitalize, and share Japanese culture.
Otaki Town, Chiba Prefecture, is about an hour from Tokyo.
The inn is located in an old private house not far from Otaki Castle and the castle town.
We would like to invite you to play, learn, and participate
in activities to protect old private homes.
Please come and visit us.

■Marugayatsu's former landlord History of the Kogoma Residence

The building itself is said to be 200 years old, built at the end of the Edo period.
However, its history goes deeper than that; it is said to have been rebuilt after a fire during the Edo period.
The Kogoma Residence is an old house steeped in ancient history and has been passed down from generation to generation among the lineage of a prestigious family.

■How "Marugayatsu, a one-building rental and hands-on accommodation facility" was completed

The historical and traditional "Marugayatsu" had been vacant for more than 10 years due to a lack of ownership, and the building was not in a very good condition.
However, the strength of the wood used in the main building and the condition of the storehouse were very good, and we thought it would be a wonderful building if it were revitalized.
In order to preserve, fortify, and impart Japanese culture, we, the
"First-Class Architect Office Hito to KOMINJO" decided to purchase the building and revitalize it.
We started demolition in December 2008, and opened on April 28, 2017, in time for the Otaki Lentil Festival.
We believe that this will be a wonderful business model for
"regional development" in depopulated areas.

■Origin of "Marugayatsu"

The name of the facility, "Marugayatsu," was taken from the family's trade name.
A "yagome" is an ancient Japanese cultural title given to a family based on the characteristics of the family or clan.
The family crest is also used on printed materials. The family crest name is "Maruni-ken Katabami".
At "Marugayatsu," we would like to preserve Japanese cultural practices such as using house names and family crests.
